Projektbeschreibung der*des Nominierenden

Professor Lujan is an international authority in the study of the molecular basis of cellular differentiation and adaptation of early-branching eukaryotic organisms, in particular of those acting as human pathogens. Professor Lujan has discovered the molecular mechanism controlling antigenic variation in the intestinal parasite Giardia lamblia, was able to disrupt this process that allows the microorganism to avoid the immune response of its hosts and developed the first oral vaccine composed solely of surface antigens of Giardia. Since these proteins protect the parasite in the harsh environment of the upper intestinal tract and since they are highly immunogenic, Professor Lujan designed an oral vaccine platform composed by Virus-like Particles covered with those Giardia molecules to deliver vaccinal antigens by the oral route. In Germany, he continues his research on the development of oral vaccines against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other respiratory pathogens.
